A Research on the Effects of Art Therapy on Improving Interpersonal Relations and Marital Satisfaction of an Adult Diagnosed as Having Schizotypal Personality Disorder

Abstract
This study investigated the effects of art therapy on improving the interpersonal relationships and marital satisfaction of the participant. In this study, the participant was a male adult who had problems maintaining a good interpersonal relationships and getting satisfaction out of his married life. This individual was diagnosed as having Schizotypal Personality Disorder, He received 23 sessions of art therapy, once a week, and each session lasted 90 minutes long. The instruments for this study included DSM-IV-TR, MMPI-2, K-MSI, and KIIP. The data were statistically analyzed. In addition, the participant was observed in each session for an analysis of change in his symptoms. First, art therapy was effective on improving interpersonal relationships of the participant. Significant differences were found in the profiles of IIP Circumplex Scale and an item of IIP Personality Disorder Scale. Second, art therapy was effective on improving marital satisfaction of the participant. In the subscales of K-MSI, such as emotional empathy, problem solving ability, shared time, the spouse's family and children's complaints. Third, the session analysis of change in participant' symptoms showed that art therapy was effective on improving the schizotypal symptoms of the participant. At the termination phase of the program the participant felt that his interpersonal relationships and ability of self-integration improved, and he felt that he could overcome the symptoms of Schizotypal Personality Disorder.
